Act Now Wins E-Learning Gap Analysis Tender

Act Now is pleased to announce that it has won a contract to deliver consultancy services to a major organisation in the regulatory sector.

We have been asked to use our information law and security expertise to assess the content of the organisation’s mandatory e-learning modules covering the Data Protection Act, Information Security (ISO 27001:2013 certification) and the Freedom of Information Act.

The purpose of the assessment is to ensure that the training content meets the legislative and ISO 27001 (2013) requirements and meets the needs of the organisation’s staff, associates and contractors, providing them with a gap analysis report based on the current training provision, examples of best practice and legislative requirements.

This project will be led by Ibrahim Hasan and Frank Rankin who are well-known experts and trainers in this field. Commenting on the award of the contract, Ibrahim Hasan said:

“I am very pleased to have the opportunity to use our expertise on this project. This is one of many recent consultancy projects Act Now has undertaken and enhances our reputation as one of the UK’s leading providers of in house training and consultancy in information law and information management.”

To Brunei and Back – A tale of training far far away

On Friday (29th January) Paul Gibbons and I returned from Brunei after delivering data protection audit training to government staff. We had a truly memorable trip. The hospitality, generosity and warmth of the Brunei people ensured that we made some fantastic new friends.

We delivered a two-day course to twelve staff (Information Security Officers (ISOs)) working in various government agencies including education, health and immigration. Whilst Brunei does not have data protection legislation, it does have a Data Protection Policy which applies to all government agencies. This is loosely based on the UK Data Protection Act and has been signed off at the highest level. All agencies are required to comply with the policy but there is no regulator like our Information Commissioner. Having said there was a real commitment on the part of the delegates and the organisers to implement best data protection practice.

Having successfully completed the course, the ISOs will now audit government agencies to assess levels of compliance. They have been trained to consider DP policies and procedures as well as staff knowledge and awareness. They will produce a report which will be considered by the head of each agency.

In addition to the formal training there were some lively discussions during the breaks about the different approaches to Data Protection in the UK and Brunei. Other important subjects for discussion included the relative success of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United!

This training was phase 2 of our Brunei consultancy project. Phase 1 involved developing a Data Protection Audit Manual, drafted by our colleague Tim Turner, based on the Brunei Data Protection Policy. This included guidance on DP audit planning, preparation and the use of DP audit templates. Many delegates commented that the manual was clear, comprehensive and very easy to follow.

This is one of many recent consultancy projects we have conducted. It enhances our reputation as one of the UK’s leading providers of in house training and consultancy in information law and information management. As more countries enact data protection legislation, we hope to be at the forefront of developing products and services that will enable those working in this field to develop their skills. But all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy! Whilst the tourism industry in Brunei is not as developed as its neighbour Malaysia, there is still plenty to see and do (and eat). There are some stunning mosques which will impress people of all faiths and none.

The food is a tasty mix of traditional Malay cuisine as well as dishes influenced by the many Chinese and Indians who have settled in Brunei. You can enjoy the delicious (and very cheap) street food in the Night Market or dine in style in the many upmarket restaurants. There is something for all tastes and budgets.

We also took the opportunity to ride a water taxi to the historic water village of Kampong Ayar. Over 1000 years old it boasts 500 houses built on stilts in the river. A further trip up the river allowed us to see a few monkeys and the odd (less cuddly) crocodile!

In January 2015 the Act Now team will be flying out to Brunei to deliver data protection audit training to staff working for the Government of Brunei.

Negara Brunei Darussalam, to give Brunei its full name, is a small country located in Southeast Asia. It is surrounded by Malaysia and has two parts physically separated by Malaysia. Here is the BBC’s guide to the country.

Act Now Appointed to Deliver Information Rights Consultancy Project

Act Now Training is pleased to announce that it has won a tender to deliver information rights consultancy services to an executive agency of a UK Government Department.

The Rural Payments Agency (RPA) is an executive agency of Defra, and operates as the single accredited CAP paying agency in England on behalf of Defra and the Devolved Administrations. It delivers £2.3 billion of CAP payments each year to the businesses and organisations which supply our food, maintain our rural economy, cultural heritage and environmental landscapes. In total, it is responsible for over 40 EU CAP schemes, some of which apply across GB and the UK.

RPA is subject to the full range of information access legislation including the Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information Act and the Environmental Information Regulations. Act Now has been tasked with reviewing the RPA’s information rights handling policies and procedures in the light of best practice and legislative developments. By the end of March we will be delivering a report setting out our recommendations.

Paul Simpkins and Tim Turner, well known experts and trainers in this field, will lead this project. Commenting on the award of the contract, Ibrahim Hasan (director of Act Now Training) said:

Amongst other things, Act Now’s work for the Brunei Government will involve developing a Data Protection Audit manual based on the Data Protection Policy released by the Brunei Government. This will include guidance on DP audit planning, preparation and the use of DP audit templates. In time we hope to be training government officials on the developed Audit Manual and procedure.

Act Now has been delivering information governance consultancy services to the UK public sector for many years. This includes preparing for audits, designing standard documents and policies and carrying out DP and FOI health checks. We have also developed a number of off-the-shelf products.

The Brunei project will be led by Ibrahim Hasan and Tim Turner, well known experts and trainers in this field. Commenting on the award of the contract, Ibrahim Hasan said:
